Oil stains happen frequently,
especially while working in kitchen or garages. Moreover the first poor little
prey of these oil stains happens to be your shirt. No matter how indifferent or
aloof you might happen to be when it comes to looks, yet still you wouldn’t
want oil spills all over your front, blighting your shirt’s appearance.
Oil stains on cotton shirts
look horrible; as oil might seep into your shirt ruining it for good. Cooking
oil, motor oil, oily hair products etc. can mar your favorite cotton shirt,
leaving you with no other choice but to discard it off. A much worse scenario
is incurring these stains on your silk shirt. Silk is an expensive and delicate
fabric, claiming glamor to its name. Yet its beauty can be devastated with a
single drop of oil staining its soft and gentle texture.
Prompt and adequate action
at your part can save both your cotton and silk shirts from ruin which ensues
from oil stain. Follow the tips given below and follow them swiftly; hopefully
by the time you are done with these methods, the stain would be nowhere to be
seen.
Method One (For the Removal of Oil Stains
from Cotton Shirt)
Using WD-40
Do you have that clumsy
sibling or spouse who defies the laws of physics, spilling and knocking
everything all around? Or perhaps you are that person yourself. For all such
people, the following method happens to be like glad tidings from heaven as it
goes a long way in the effective removal of oil stains from cotton.
Things
that you will require:
· Liquid dish detergent
· Tooth brush
· Card board
· Q tips
· WD-40
Steps
that you need to take:
1.
Primarily,
take some generic WD-40. Although, it might appear to be extreme but then
desperate times call for desperate measures, and in my dictionary, having your
favorite cotton shirt stained with oil is pretty desperate.
2.
Place
a cardboard underneath the oil stain. You can place it at the front or at the
back of the shirt.
3.
After
the placement of this cardboard, spray each oil stain with WD-40.
4.
However,
if the stains you have come across with are super tiny, then instead of
spraying them with WD-40, take a small bowl and pour some WD-40 in it. Then
with the help of a Q Tip, you can dab the stain with this chemical.
5.
Afterwards,
take some baking soda and apply it on the stain.
6.
With
the help of a tooth brush, start working this soda onto the stain. Rub
vigorously with the tooth brush.
7.
After letting it sit in for some time, brush
the soda off. This baking soda would have absorbed the oil from the stain.
8.
Eventually
to get rid of the remaining oil, baking soda and WD-40 traces, pour some liquid
dish washing detergent on the stained area.
9.
Using
a tooth brush, work this detergent onto the stain.
10.
Rinse
the stain with water and then launder it like you normally do.
11.
You
will end up with a shirt as good as new free of oil stains.
Method Two (For the Removal of
Oil stains from Silk Shirt)
Using Corn Starch or Citrus
Solvent
Corn starch is that amazing
ingredient which acts simply and effectively on any oil stain prompting it to
get out. The following simple method also deploys the magical stain-lifting
powers of corn starch. Embark upon the following method and restore your silk
shirt to its magical glory.
Things
that you will require:
· Corn starch
· Dry washcloth/ dry brush
· Paper towels
· Iron
· Citrus Solvent
· Cotton swab
Steps
that you need to take:
1. First of all you will need
to lay your hands on some corn starch. It is handy to have this amazing product
at home always, since it helps in the removal of a multitude of stains.
2. Apply a liberal layer of
this corn starch on the oil stain, and let it sit there for some time,
approximately 20 minutes.
3. Once this time span is
over, brush off this corn starch from the stain, using a dry wash cloth or
brush. Corn starch will have absorbed most of the oil from the stain.
4. To take care of the
remaining stain traces, take some paper towels. Place a layer of paper towels
underneath the oil stain and over it.
5. Next, take an iron and
adjust it on a low heat setting. Iron the paper towel placed on the stain.
6. Soon, the oil particles
will come out of the stain and onto the paper towel.
7. If corn starch doesn’t work
on your stain, then you can also take help of any citrus solvent such as Citra
Solve.
8. Using a cotton swab, dab
the stain with this solvent.
9. Afterwards, you can repeat
the iron and paper towel procedure, as elaborated above.
10. Hopefully, the oil stain
will be removed, leaving you with your beautiful silk shirt, free of all sorts
of stains.
Tip:
For the removal of oil stains,
rubbing alcohol or other dry cleaning solvents such as K2r and Afta can also be
used. These solvents ought to be used in a well-ventilated area and on a dry
fabric.
