How to Remove Blood Stains from Wood

Accidents do happen whether you choose to turn a blind eye towards them or not. Naturally, blood stains tend to be a definite consequence. Perhaps your kid might scratch his knee while playing football and then return home with his cut knee dripping blood on your floor.

Situations and circumstances might vary but blood stains are that wretched outcome with which you have to deal sooner or later.

If not treated swiftly, these blood stains might set into your wooden floor and consequently discolor it for good. Therefore blood stains are the most aggravating ones, since you not only have to take care of the injured person but also have to take care of the ensuing stains, lest your precious wooden floor be ruined.

Yet, you need not panic, because hereby we provide you with some effective tips which would immensely help in the removal of these stubborn stains. Follow the directions given below and get rid of these stains.

Method One (For Untreated Wood)

The stain removal method which you ought to opt for depends upon the type of wood you are dealing with. The following method works best for blood stains which have left their mark upon untreated wood.

Things that you will require:

· Brush
· White vinegar
· Baking soda
· Bleach
· Cold water
· Clean cloths
· vacuum

Steps that you need to take:

1.   First of all, wipe away as much of the blood as possible using a clean cloth. If the stain happened to be fresh then it might come off easily whereas if it happened to be dry then you will have to make use of a little elbow grease.

2.   Take a brush and soak it in vinegar. Using this brush, start working onto the stain. Vinegar is an excellent cleaning agent and therefore it would react with the blood stain, prompting it to come off the floor.

3.   Next sprinkle some baking soda onto it so that it can absorb all the excess moisture. Later, sweep or vacuum away the baking soda residue.

4.   If despite these two treatments, the blood stain refuses to come off, then you can also consider bleach as an option.

5.   Eventually, once you are satisfied that all blood stain remnants have gone, then wipe the wooden floor with a clean cloth soaked in cold water and allow it to air dry.

Method Two (For Polished Wood)

In case, where the wood you are dealing with happens to be polished, then try going for the following stain removal method.

Things that you will require:

· Cold water
· Soap
· Sanding paper
· Wax
· Buff
· Sponge
· Clean cloth

Steps that you need to take:

1.   After wiping away any excess blood, make a cleaning solution by combining cold water and detergent/soap.

2.   Apply this soapy water onto the stain with the help of a sponge and work onto it.

3.   Once the stain starts disappearing or fading, wipe the stained area with a clean cloth.

4.   Blood stain might discolor polished wood, therefore in order to remedy this situation you need to take the following steps.

5.   Take a sanding paper and use it to sand the stained polish down.

6.   Next, vacuum away the entire residue.

7.   Finally, wax and buff the wood to restore it to its natural shine.

You can also use commercial products which are especially manufactured for removal of stain particles from appliances. Make sure that you read all the instructions given and comply with them.

Method Three (For Varnished Wood)

Try the following method for removing blood stains from varnished wood and end up with a wooden floor which will be as good as new.

Things that you will require:

· Damp sponge
· Cold water
· Clean rag
· French polish
· Linseed oil
· Methylated spirits

Steps that you need to take:

1.   Take hold of a damp sponge and use it to wipe away the blood stains.

2.   Then, rinse the stain with cold water and finally use a clean rag to dry up your wooden floor.

3.   However, the former method was applicable on fresh stains. If it’s an old blood stain which you are dealing with, then make a mixture of French polish, linseed oil and methylated spirits. Using a cloth dab this mixture onto the stained area and then rinse with cold water.

Tip:

Always use cold water while working with blood stains, as hot water can further set in protein stains instead of removing them.

Add a third stage if the stains are still difficult to remove. Gently brush the affected region with your fine bristles while using #000 steel wool. The first few passes over the stain may be enough to remove the blood without hurting the floor, so use caution while applying pressure. When the stain has been removed, dry the surface before wiping away any remaining residue with a moist towel. You will need to apply new finish or stain to the area as a final step if you do use a little additional "umph" with your steel wool and damage the finish.
