Were you working with your motor; oiling and
refurbishing it but before you knew you had spilled some oil on your wooden
floor, despite your utmost care?
Were you fixing up a
sumptuous meal for you and your husband, but a slight lack of attention at your
part resulted in oil stains on your wooden table?
The conditions and
circumstances might vary, but many of us would have or perhaps in the future
might come across situations where we end up with oil stains on our wooden
furniture or floors. These stains tend to be unsightly and stubborn; and they
can come as a very expensive blow.
However, before you let
your spirits dwindle; try on the methods given below. Swift action and a little
elbow grease would be able to save you from lots of trouble; get rid of these
nasty stains and restore your furniture and floors to their original state, by
adopting one of the following methods.
Method One (Using Detergent and
Solvent)
This
method is worth a try as it is simple and basically comprises of ingredients
which are easily available at homes. Yet since, this method deploys mineral
spirits for the removal of oil stains from wood; therefore caution should be an
important consideration while applying this method.
Things that you will require:
·
Rubber
gloves
·
paper
towels/Blotting paper
·
Bucket
·
Dish
Detergent
·
Soft
Cloth
·
Mineral
Spirits
Steps that you need to take:
1.
Primarily,
take some paper towels and wipe off the excess oil from the stain. If paper
towels are not available, then blotting paper can also be used in its stead as
it effectively absorbs moisture from the stain.
2.
Take
some warm water in a bucket and make its solution with dish detergent. Spread
soap suds onto the stain.
3.
Slightly,
rub the detergent onto the stain to remove it. Try working it in the stain as
well as you can. Afterwards rinse it off with clean water.
4.
Soap
and water might have cleaned the oil stain on wood to some extent, yet you
cannot judge appropriately when the wood is still damp, therefore before you
move on to the next step, air dry the stain.
5.
Once
the wood has been dried, check out if the stain has gone or not.
6.
Lastly,
take the help of mineral spirits. This solvent is a chemical stripper and
thinner, easily available on local hardware stores, and can effectively remove
tough oil stains.
7.
Pour
Mineral spirit onto a wash cloth and then rub the oil stain on wood with this
wash cloth.
8.
Hopefully
this will enable you to get rid of oil stain.
Tip:
Mineral spirit tends to be very strong
and can cause skin irritation, therefore use plastic gloves while handling it
and be extremely careful. If this method does not work, you can adopt the
following method.
Method two (Using oxygenated bleach)
This method can be given a shot if the above
method doesn’t work or if you are unable to lay your hands on mineral solvents.
The following method makes use of ordinary oxygen bleach to remove oil stains
from wood. You can come across this bleach by the name of OxiClean as well.
Things that you will require:
·
Warm
water
·
Oxygenated
bleach
·
Soft
bristled brush
·
Soft
dry cloths
Steps that you need to take:
1.
You are not supposed to directly apply this
oxygenated bleach onto the stain. Rather first mix it into warm water.
2.
Then,
apply this solution onto the oil stain, by means of a soft cloth. Rub this
cloth onto the stain.
3.
You
have to be careful while applying bleach onto the oil stain. Make sure that you
just blot the stain with bleached water, instead of saturating it; otherwise
you might end up with a water stain.
4.
Afterwards,
work the bleach onto the stain, with the help of a soft-bristled brush.
5.
Then,
wipe it off with a clean, dry cloth.
6.
Repeat
the above processes, until the oil stain from wood gets out satisfactorily.
Precaution:
Bleach might change the color of your wooden surface;
therefore first test it on an inconspicuous area.
