How to remove Pet Urine stains from hardwood floors

All the people who have pets at home have one common problem; pet (cat/dog) urine stains on hardwood floor. It doesn’t matter if your pet is potty trained and has a litter box, sometimes they just tend to urinate wherever they want. It is said that sometimes if you are rude to your cat or dog, they will urinate on your things or in your room just to take revenge. In case the floor of your room is covered with hardwood, it will be very hard to clean their urine from it.

The urine stains should be immediately taken care of. It isn’t much of a problem because they can be located easily. All you have to do is follow the smell. In order to make pet urine stain removal easy, we have the following methods for you. These methods will not only clean the stains but will also take care of the smell.

Method 1

Things that you will require:

·      Cleaning towels
·      Clean water
·      Spray bottle
·      Empty bowl
·      Plastic bag
·      Hydrogen peroxide
·      Dish washing liquid
·      White vinegar

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   Start by checking if the stains are fresh. Take a cleaning towel and dry up the spot completely. Now put the cleaning towel in the plastic bag.

2.   Spill clean water onto the stained area of the hardwood floor and clean with another cleaning towel. Put this one into the plastic bag as well.

3.   Mix equal quantities of hydrogen peroxide, dish washing liquid and water in the empty bowl. Put this solution into the spray bottle and spray the stained area. Let the solution stay on the stains for about 5 minutes. Now wipe it off the hardware floor with a cleaning towel.

4.   Now rinse the bowl and add vinegar to it and twice as much water. Dispose of the previous mixture in the spray bottle, rinse it and then add the vinegar solution to it. Spray the stains with it and leave it on for about 5 to 7 minutes.

5.   Wipe the stained area again with a cleaning towel. In case you aren’t satisfied with the stain removal repeat step 4.

Method 2

Things that you will require:

·      Hydrogen peroxide
·      Tape
·      Plastic sheet
·      Baking soda
·      Spray bottle
·      Cleaning towels
·      Gloves
·      Plastic bag
·      Broom

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   If the urine stains on the hardwood floor are fresh, put on the gloves and wipe the surface with a cleaning towel. Make sure you work your way inward i.e. towards the center of the stain to avoid spreading the urine to unaffected areas of the floor.

2.   Now take a fresh towel and spread it on the stained floor. Add the hydrogen peroxide to the spray bottle and add equal quantity of water. Now spray the cleaning towel with this solution. Leave it for about an hour or two.

3.   In order to make sure that the peroxide doesn’t dry up, spread the plastic on the cleaning towel and tape it to the floor. Make sure you use a paper tape that will come off easily without leaving marks on the floor.

4.   Take off the plastic and dispose of it in a plastic bag, along with the cleaning towel.

5.   Take another cleaning towel and dip it in water. Clean the hydrogen peroxide solution off the stains.

6.   Now sprinkle baking soda onto the stained area and let it absorb the moisture. Make sure that the baking soda is used in a large quantity covering the whole area that had been stained. Leave it on the floor for about an hour or two.

7.   Now sweep it off with the broom. Dispose of it in the plastic bag as well.

Tips:

·      Always remember that whatever you use to clean the urine stains goes into an air tight plastic bag so that your pets can’t smell it. If you place the smelly rags anywhere else they will think of this place as a new spot for urinating.

·      Constantly spraying formerly stained areas with flower smelled sprays will eventually make the smell go away.

·      It is best to keep your pet (cat/dog) away from the spot where they urinated.
