How to Remove Grease Stains from Granite

When oil, margarine, butter or any greasy stain forms a place on your beautiful granite counter top, it is likely to drive you crazy. The reason why granite counter tops get stained so easily is because granite itself is porous. Hence, the grease gets easily absorbed in the stone, leaving a huge mark. Afraid to damage their granite counter top, most people tend to call fabricators and restoration contractors if such an accident occurs. However, if you wish to get rid of the grease stain with little cost, and in lesser time, follow one of the methods outlined below.

Method One (Using Acetone and Talcum Powder)

Things that you will require:

·      Distilled water
·      Talcum powder
·      Pure acetone
·      Plastic wrap
·      Tape
·      Plastic scraper
·      Clean, soft cloths

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   Firstly, before you apply any chemical to the stained area, rinse it with distilled water. This will accelerate the treatment of the stain once the chemical is applied to it.

2.   The next step involves the preparation of the poultice that is to be used for the cleaning of the stain. Poultice can be made in the following 2 forms: powder and paper. If paper poultice is to be made, you will need paper towels and a stain removal chemical. If powder poultice is to be made, you will require talcum powder and a stain removal chemical. Powder poultice is easier to make, and hence, recommended. To do so, mix pure acetone with talcum powder. Make sure the consistency of the paste is that of a peanut butter spread.

3.   Now, apply the powder poultice to the stained area. The layer of poultice should be a quarter inch thick, and should overlap the stained area about half to 1 inch. Be careful to not spill it on other parts of the granite counter top.

4.   Cover the poultice with a plastic wrap. Put tape on the edges so that the plastic remains in place.
5.   Leave the poultice in place for 24 hours.

6.   The next day, remove the plastic wrap from the poultice.

7.   Leave the powder poultice in place, and let it dry completely. This may take some time.

8.   Next, grab a plastic scraper, and get to work. Scrape away the paste completely. Be careful to not damage the granite counter top.

9.   Grab a clean, soft cloth, and wipe away any paste that is still remaining on the granite.

10.   Wash the granite counter top as normal, and dry it with another cloth.

11.   Once the counter top dries, check for visibility of any remaining greasy stain. If you can still see the stain, repeat the above process.

Method Two (Using Unbleached Flour and Dish Washing Liquid)

Things that you will require:

·      Container
·      Unbleached flour
·      Dish washing liquid
·      Water
·      Plastic wrap
·      Tape
·      Plastic scraper
·      Soft, clean cloths

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   The first step involves the making of the cleaning solution required for the removal of the greasy stain from the granite counter top. To do so, grab a container, add 1 cup of unbleached flour to it, followed by 3 tablespoons of dish washing liquid, and a little water. The consistency of the solution should be that of a peanut butter spread or yogurt. Your poultice has now been formed.

2.   Apply this poultice carefully to the stained area. Be careful to not spill it on other parts of the granite counter top. The layer of the solution should be a quarter inch thick, and should overlap the stain about 0.5 to 1 inch.

3.   Now, cover the poultice with a plastic wrap. Apply tape to the edges of the poultice so that it remains in place.

4.   Leave the poultice in place for 24 hours.

5.   The next day, remove the plastic wrap from the poultice, and let it dry completely.

6.   Once the poultice has dried, grab a plastic scraper, and scrape away the poultice. Be careful to not damage the granite counter top in the process.

7.   Remove any remaining paste with a clean, dry cloth.

8.   Wash the granite counter top as normal, and wipe it dry with a soft, clean cloth.

9.   The stain should have disappeared by now. In case of any remaining visible stain, repeat the above steps.
