How to Remove Hard Water Stains from Granite Countertops

In today’s day and age, granite has become the topmost choice when it comes to choosing countertops for a new kitchen or bathroom. Simply put, it is practical and gorgeous. Furthermore, granite comes in various designs and colors, hence, offering you great variety. However, cleaning granite can be difficult, especially when hard water stains take their place on the granite countertop. Hard water is water containing a high mineral content, such as magnesium, and stains can often be formed if hard water is left on the countertop for too long. Once it dries, it leaves white circles that ruin the appearance of your granite countertop.

One way to remove the hard water stains from your granite countertop is to scrape away the mineral deposits using a razor blade. This, however, requires a steady hand, and can cause damage to the countertop if not handled properly.

Do not lose hope. That is not the only way to clean hard water stains from the granite countertop. Outlined below is another way you can use to get rid of the stains.

Things that you will require:

·      Paper towel
·      White vinegar
·      Clean cloths
·      Baking soda
·      Water
·      Bowl
·      Plastic wrap
·      Mild soap

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   Grab a paper towel, and a bottle of white vinegar. Soak the paper towel completely in the white vinegar.

2.   Put the soaked paper towel on top of the hard water stain, and let it remain in place for 24 hours.

3.   The next day, remove the paper towel.

4.   Dip a clean cloth in clear water, and wipe the granite surface with it.

If the hard water stain is still visible, proceed in the following way:

5.   Make a paste out of baking soda and water. Add 3 teaspoon of baking soda to 1 teaspoon of water in a bowl. Mix the two ingredients. The paste should like a cream.

6.   Now, sprinkle a little water on to the stain.

7.   Apply a ¼ inch thick paste on the hard water stain, and rub it gently.

8.   Wrap the paste on the stain in plastic. Put tape on the edges so that the plastic remains in place.

9.   Leave the paste in place for 24 hours.

10.   The next day, remove the plastic wrap.

11.   Dip a clean cloth in clear water, and wipe the countertop with it.

12.   Apply mild soap and water to the affected area to clean it.

13.   Wipe it dry with another cloth.

14.   If the hard water stain has still not been completely removed, repeat the above steps.
